Art from used stamps
What happens to millions of used stamps? Do they end up as waste or in stamp collections? In 1997, Swiss artist Denise Büter, who lives in Germany, began creating art from used postage stamps.
Inspired by the special significance of stamps, she continues to create extraordinary works of art. The artist's paintings and objects have enriched numerous exhibitions in Switzerland and Germany, including Freiburg, Gottenheim, Mulhouse, Staufen im Breisgau, Weil am Rhein, Vienna, Bellinzona, Davos, and Locarno.
Born in Zurich in 1959, Denise Büter lives and works in Staufen im Breisgau. As a freelance artist, the advertising expert began in the late nineties to produce and design art objects from original stamps of many countries. She created objects such as chairs, stools, paintings, and light boxes with Swiss mountain landscapes. Each object is unique; many now adorn homes, shops and doctors' surgeries.
Before another exhibition of the artist's work opens in March 2025, some very unusual objects will be displayed in Staufen im Breisgau shopping streets in December 2024. This will be the fiftieth anniversary of the “Altstaufener Weihnachtsgeld”. The trade association will distribute vouchers to the participating shops. Customers receive Christmas vouchers for their purchases, which can be redeemed at the stalls of the local Christmas market from 7 December 2024. Stamp artist Denise Büter has created art objects from old Christmas stamps that relate to the products offered at the participating shops. The objects have been on display in the shops since mid-October.
